The best part? Maui goes all out for Christmas. The Shops at Wailea deck their halls with tropical decorations that somehow make perfect sense in 80-degree weather. You can hit the beach all day and still get your holiday fix.
Stay somewhere amazing like the Honua Kai Resort & Spa where your kids can play in the pool while you sip something with an umbrella in it. Or splurge on the Fairmont Kea Lani for that luxe beachfront experience.

If you want a warm Christmas with a side of city life, Honolulu is your spot.
Picture this: You’re walking along Waikiki Beach on Christmas morning, and someone dressed as Santa paddles by on a surfboard. That actually happens here, and it’s exactly as awesome as it sounds.
The temperature hovers around 75 degrees in December, which is perfect beach weather. But here’s what surprised me the most: they actually make it snow inside Ala Moana Center. My kids went absolutely wild for it.
The holiday decorations around Honolulu are gorgeous. Ward Village has the best Santa setup on the island, complete with tropical backdrops for photos. And if you’re there for New Year’s, don’t miss the Fukubukuro shopping event at Ala Moana Center. It’s a Japanese tradition where stores sell lucky bags full of surprise deals.

3. Kauai, Hawaii
Kauai is the quieter, more laid-back cousin in the Hawaii family. And for a peaceful Christmas? It’s perfect.
The big event here is the Festival of Lights at the Historic County Building in Lihue. What makes it special is that all the decorations are made from recycled materials.
We’re talking Christmas trees decorated with plastic bottles and aluminum cans transformed into beautiful ornaments. It’s creative, it’s eco-friendly, and it runs from late November through New Year’s Day (6-11 p.m. nightly).
During the day, you can bike and hike through places like Kokee State Park, Polihale State Park, and the stunning Na Pali Coast. At night, watch those sparkling lights dance off the water.
The weather in Kauai during December is absolutely perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Just right for outdoor adventures and beach days.

4. San Diego, California
San Diego weather is pretty much perfect year-round, but December is especially nice. Temps around 65 degrees mean you can spend all day at the beach without roasting.
The city really does Christmas right. December Nights at Balboa Park happens December 5-6, 2025, and it’s completely free. The whole park transforms with lights, international food vendors, live music, and museums open late. My kids especially loved trying foods from the different cultural houses.
Want something super San Diego? Hit up Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo, where animals and Christmas decorations somehow work together perfectly.
The Hotel Del Coronado sets up ice skating right on the beach. It’s one of those only-in-California moments that makes Christmas feel both familiar and totally different.
Got younger kids? LEGOLAND California is about 30 minutes north and they go all out with holiday shows, a massive LEGO Christmas tree, and festive decorations everywhere.

5. Austin, Texas
Austin does Christmas lights better than just about anywhere. The Trail of Lights runs December 10-23, 2025, and features more than 2 million lights with over 70 festive displays spread throughout Zilker Park.
What’s cool is they’ve made it more than just lights. There are food trucks, rides, live entertainment, and the iconic 155-foot Zilker Holiday Tree that’s actually a vintage moontower covered in 3,309 bulbs. You can even run through the trail at their Fun Run event.
The average December temperature in Austin is in the low 60s. Perfect for strolling through all those lights without freezing your face off.
Some nights offer free general admission, while others charge $0-8 per person depending on the date. Kids 11 and under are always free with a ticketed adult.

My husband and I spent our first Christmas together in Phoenix years ago, and it was such a unique experience. The weather sits around 65-70 degrees, which means you can golf during the day and enjoy Christmas lights at night.
Rawhide Wild Horse Pass does nightly snowfall (yes, artificial, but the kids don’t care) along with Santa visits and sparkling lights everywhere. Over in Litchfield Park, there’s ice skating at the Wigwam.
Phoenix is also a short drive from Scottsdale, which has its own amazing holiday events and tons of things to do with kids.

7. Miami, Florida
Don’t worry, Santa knows where to find you even if you’re lounging on South Beach on Christmas Eve.
Miami in December is gorgeous. The temperatures hover around 75 degrees, and those pristine beaches are calling your name.
The beach scene here is unbeatable. You’ve got everything from family-friendly spots to that classic Miami vibe. And the food? Amazing. Cuban sandwiches, fresh seafood, and every cuisine you can imagine.

8. Savannah, Georgia
Okay, Savannah isn’t exactly warm, but at 60 degrees in December, it’s a nice break from freezing temps up north. And the Christmas atmosphere here is absolutely magical.
Picture taking a leisurely Christmas morning stroll through Forsyth Park with its stunning fountain and Spanish moss dripping from the trees.
Or walking through Bonaventure Cemetery (I know that sounds weird, but it’s hauntingly beautiful and totally appropriate for Savannah’s gothic vibe).
The historic district is packed with gorgeous classical architecture, and the whole city gets dressed up for the holidays. You’ll find decorations everywhere and plenty of ghost tours if that’s your thing.
For a romantic touch, stay at The Gastonian, a gorgeous inn from the 1800s. Or try the Kimpton Brice Hotel, a converted warehouse that’s now a luxury hotel.

9. Walt Disney World, Florida
Last year my family headed to Disney World the week before Christmas, and wow. Just wow.
Full disclosure: it was rainier and chillier than I expected (Florida can surprise you in December), but that’s not typical. Usually, temps are in the 60s-70s, which is perfect for park hopping.
We stayed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Kidani Village, and walking into that lobby with the massive Christmas tree? Pure magic.
Actually, tons of Disney hotels have incredible holiday displays. We made special trips to see the trees at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
Every park goes all out with decorations, characters in festive outfits, special treats, and holiday shows. But the real highlight? Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party runs select nights from November 7 through December 21, 2025.
You get exclusive fireworks, a parade with actual snowfall on Main Street, rare character meet-and-greets, and unlimited cookies and hot chocolate. Tickets run $169-229 per person (kids 11 and under are free for general admission), and many dates sell out early.

10. Las Vegas, Nevada
Hear me out. Vegas at Christmas with kids is actually really fun.
Yes, it’s known for nightlife, but the city transforms during the holidays. The Bellagio Hotel Conservatory & Botanical Gardens creates an incredible Christmas display that changes every season. It’s completely free and perfect for family photos.
Temperatures in December hover around 55-60 degrees during the day. Chilly for desert standards but warm compared to most of the country.
The Candy Cane House in Henderson is a must-see if you have kids. The whole place is decorated floor to ceiling, and it’ll bring out the kid in everyone.
Don’t forget about the holiday lights all over the Strip. It’s over-the-top Vegas style, which means it’s pretty spectacular.

11. Grand Isle, Louisiana
This one might not be on your radar, but Grand Isle is Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island with actual beaches. And it’s warm enough in December to enjoy them.
Grand Isle is famous for fishing and as a migratory bird watching spot. The seafood here is incredible, and you’ve got gorgeous views of the Gulf of Mexico everywhere you look.
Saint John Valley Catholics puts on a lights parade that’s become a local tradition. It’s a smaller, more intimate Christmas celebration, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
The vibe here is laid-back Louisiana coastal. Perfect if you want to escape the crowds and enjoy a quieter Christmas by the water.

12. Orange Beach, Alabama
Trade the white snow for white sand beaches this Christmas.
Orange Beach sits right on the Gulf of Mexico, and December temperatures are mild enough to enjoy the beach. You might not be swimming, but walking along the shore and building sandcastles? Absolutely.
There are several Christmas parades throughout December, breakfast with Santa events, and cute little shops to explore. The big events? The lighted boat parade along the beach (so pretty at night) and ice skating at The Wharf.
It’s one of those sweet Southern beach towns that feels cozy during the holidays. Less touristy than Florida but just as beautiful.
