These Hocus Pocus cupcakes are all about making life easier on yourself. So, the easiest way to make the cupcakes is to start off with a boxed cake mix.
Now, there are several ways you can swap a few ingredients to take your boxed cake mix to the next level.
Here are a few ways to improve boxed cake mix:
Milk
Instead of adding water to your boxed cake mix (per the directions), use milk. We usually use full-fat milk because it makes the cupcakes taste more, as I made them from scratch.
Melted Butter
Most cake mixes ask you to use canola or vegetable oil. Those are pretty much flavorless.
Instead, use melted butter. It will taste WAY better!
Vanilla
If you’re making a white cake mix, add a vanilla splash. It really will enhance the flavor and give it a bakery shop taste.
Extra Egg
If you want a richer-tasting cupcake, crack an extra egg into your batter. Usually, boxed cake mixes will require 2-3 eggs. Make it 3-4. This is a super easy trick that makes a big difference.
How to Use the Hocus Pocus Cupcake Toppers
To prepare your printable cupcake decorations, just download the file and print them out on a sheet of sturdy cardstock.
Each page has 12 toppers (3 different designs) that can be cut out by hand, with a 2″ circle craft punch, or with the print and cut function on a machine like a Cricut.
Print enough for each cupcake to have two labels, then attach the circles with a glue stick to a toothpick so that the front and back both show the design.
To really make sure the adhesive does its job, I like to set a heavy book or glass cake dish on the toppers while they dry.
