Okay so you’re trying to figure out where to stay for LEGOLAND California and the prices are making you question all your life choices.
I’ve done this trip with my two boys multiple times now. We’ve stayed at both LEGOLAND hotels, I’ve had friends stay at the others, and I have Opinions.
Here’s what you actually need to know.
LEGOLAND Hotel – Yeah It’s Expensive But Hear Me Out
The LEGOLAND Hotel costs approximately one million dollars per night.
Okay not really but it’s somewhere around $400-500 depending on when you go and I remember seeing the total and being like “for THIS?”
But.

You walk out the door and you’re AT the park. Like literally right there. No driving, no parking lot trek with a tired 6-year-old who’s having a meltdown about his brother looking at him.
You can go back to the room for a nap. You can go back to the room when someone inevitably gets soaked on the boat ride and needs dry clothes.
The rooms have this separate kids’ area with bunk beds. Three of them, which I didn’t understand at first but then I realized it means each kid gets their own bed and nobody’s fighting about who has to share.

We always get the Adventure rooms because that’s what my kids like. They also have Pirate (very popular), Kingdom, NINJAGO, and LEGO Friends.
The free breakfast alone probably saves you $80-100 every morning when you factor in feeding a whole family. The kids’ buffet line is at kid height which is cute until 47 children are crowding around the waffle station at the same time.

What nobody tells you: the rooms are small. Like you’re paying this much and the room is smaller than a Hampton Inn. The bathroom situation is tight.
And parking costs EXTRA even though you’re already paying resort prices, which feels like adding insult to injury.
But the treasure hunt thing? My kids lost their minds.
There’s an actual locked treasure chest in your room and you get clues to find the code and it’s full of LEGO sets. They did this every single morning before we even left for the park.
Also there’s a bar in the lobby. Just putting that out there.
Check rates (and prepare yourself).

LEGOLAND Castle Hotel – My Kids Will Only Stay Here Now
My kids have decided the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel is the only acceptable option and I cannot convince them otherwise.
The wizard rooms look like something out of Harry Potter and my oldest is OBSESSED. They also have Knights & Dragons and Royal Princess themes.

Same setup with the bunk bed area, same free breakfast (same waffle station chaos), same treasure hunt.
This hotel is newer so it doesn’t have that “a thousand children have touched every surface” vibe that the original hotel kind of has.

The lobby’s smaller which means less indoor play space, but there’s this big outdoor playground and they do movies under the stars at night.
The talking portraits in the restaurant freak me out a little but my kids think they’re hilarious.

You can use the pools and stuff at both hotels, so you’re basically getting two properties. Which is good because the Castle Hotel pool is smaller.
Same parking fee nonsense. Same small rooms. Same prices that make you wonder if you could just build your own LEGOLAND in the backyard instead.
But if you’re already spending this much, pick the one your kids will actually remember. Mine still talk about the wizard room and we went eight months ago.

Sheraton Carlsbad – Don’t Book This Right Now
Listen.
The Sheraton Carlsbad is under construction through 2026 and from what I’m hearing from people, it’s a mess.
A friend of mine booked it last month not realizing. Got there and found out the pool is closed. The restaurant is closed. The lobby is closed.

They had to check in at the Westin next door. Her kids were SO MAD about the waterslide being closed because that’s why she picked this hotel.
So just… don’t. Not right now.

When it’s done (supposedly later this year?), it should be a normal hotel option with two queen beds per room, a pool with a waterslide, and a 15-minute walk to LEGOLAND.
There’s a private entrance to the park which is nice. No free breakfast though, and you’re paying for parking.
They take pets (2 max, 80 pounds or under, $150 fee) if you’re traveling with a dog.
But until construction is DONE done, I’d skip it. Check status before booking.

MarBrisa Carlsbad – If You Need Actual Space
The MarBrisa is basically a condo resort. You can get 1, 2, or 3-bedroom suites with full kitchens.
I haven’t stayed here personally but I know several families who love it because: kitchen.
You can make breakfast in your room instead of dropping $100 on hotel breakfast or dragging everyone to a restaurant before the park.

It’s about a 15-minute walk to LEGOLAND (they have a private entrance too). The property is huge – 43 acres – so there’s a shuttle that runs around. Three pools, playground, arcade, spa stuff for adults.
They had construction happening in 2023-24 but that’s supposed to be done now. No free breakfast obviously since you have a kitchen. Free WiFi though.

The thing about this place is it’s technically a Hilton Grand Vacations timeshare property, so sometimes you’re booking someone’s timeshare week. Which is fine, just know that’s what it is.
If you’ve got picky eaters or want to save money on food, having a kitchen is huge. See rates.
Westin Carlsbad – When You Want Normal
The Westin Carlsbad is for when you want a regular hotel experience without LEGO bricks everywhere.

Two queen beds per room. About a 20-minute walk to LEGOLAND. Five minutes to the Carlsbad Premium Outlets if you want to shop. There’s a golf course with a driving range next door.
They have four restaurants on-site which is nice. No free breakfast though. Parking costs $38 per day (or $43 for valet). WiFi in rooms is free now, which used to not be the case.

Honestly this is more of an “I’m combining LEGOLAND with other stuff in the Carlsbad area” hotel. If you’re JUST doing LEGOLAND, being 20 minutes away on foot with tired kids sounds like torture to me.
They allow one dog under 80 pounds for $25 per day (max $150 per stay).
If you’re also hitting up Disneyland on this trip, my Disneyland vs LEGOLAND comparison might help you figure out which park is better for your kids.
Questions People Always Ask Me
Are there Hilton hotels near LEGOLAND?
Yeah – The Cassara Carlsbad, Hilton Garden Inn Carlsbad Beach, Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach. The MarBrisa is Hilton too (Grand Vacations).
What about Marriott hotels?
The Sheraton and Westin are both Marriott. There’s also SpringHill Suites and Residence Inn Carlsbad.
Which hotels have free breakfast?
Both LEGOLAND Hotels. Also West Inn & Suites (I’ve heard good things about this one actually), Home2 Suites, and Fairfield Inn & Suites.
What if I can’t afford the LEGOLAND hotels?
Look at Motel 6 Carlsbad, Carlsbad By The Sea, or La Quinta.
But real talk? If you can swing it, the LEGOLAND Hotels make traveling with kids so much easier that they’re worth the money. I know that’s not helpful when they’re $500 a night but it’s true.
Best kid-friendly hotels?
For little kids (like under 8), the LEGOLAND Hotels hands down. Older kids who aren’t as into LEGO? The Sheraton or MarBrisa work better once the Sheraton reopens.
Pet-friendly options?
Sheraton: $150 per stay, 2 pets max, 80 pounds each Westin: $25 per day (max $150), 1 dog under 80 pounds Hilton Garden Inn: $75 per night
My Actual Advice After Doing This Multiple Times
If you’ve got kids under 10 and they like LEGOs, book one of the LEGOLAND Hotels. Yes they’re expensive. Yes you’ll have a moment of panic when you see the total.
But you’re not dealing with parking lot treks when everyone’s exhausted, you get free breakfast, and your kids will be SO HAPPY.
Castle Hotel if you can get it (books up faster). Regular LEGOLAND Hotel if you can’t.
If the LEGOLAND Hotels are genuinely outside your budget, MarBrisa gives you the most space and a kitchen to save money on food. Just know you’re walking 15 minutes with kids which… good luck.
The thing nobody tells you about realistic family travel planning: location matters WAY more than you think. That extra $200 to be right at the park entrance saves you from meltdowns, saves you time, and honestly saves your marriage a little bit.
Don’t try to cram too much in. Don’t skip nap time to maximize park hours. Build in actual downtime or you’ll end up with the kind of traveling with kids burnout where you need a vacation from your vacation.

That’s it. That’s the advice.
