Back in the 90s, a sea-loving Mexican family commissioned architect Octavio Ocampo to design a unique house that would showcase their love for all things ocean-related.
The result? A house that is shaped like an enormous seashell! Not only is the exterior of the house meant to celebrate the ocean, but every single detail inside it is designed to symbolize shells, be it the couch in the living room, the beds’ headboards, and just about everything in between.
This vacation rental can house four people at a time. Because it’s so unique, it tends to get booked out most of the year, so make sure to reserve your trip to Isla Mujeres in advance!

2. Azulik, Tulum
As one of the most iconic hotels in Tulum, Azulik is one of the coolest hotels in Mexico, especially for those who love wellness and nature.

As a warning, Azulik Tulum doesn’t have any TVs, electricity, or wifi available in its rooms. This is not only a way to make guests fully delve into nature, but they also do it in order to stay as environmentally friendly as possible and to protect the turtle reserve it homes.

3. Matices Hotel de Barricas, Tequila
Love tequila? Well, there’s a town called Tequila where the beverage was born, and you can actually stay in gigantic barrels for the night in order to complete the experience!
This “hotel” (if you may call it that?) is located inside a tequila farm. Amid fields of agave, you’ll find rooms shaped like actual barrels.
They may look small, but they all have just about everything you may need for a perfect stay, including a mini bar, a balcony with beautiful views of nature, and super comfy beds.
Of course, you can pair the experience with tequila-tasting sessions at the farm or you can go all in and ride the Tequila Express, which is a short train ride that takes you all around the outskirts of town to view different factories while sipping lots and lots of tequila.

4. Nido de Quetzalcoatl, Mexico City
Shaped like a snake, Nido de Quetzalcoatl is a humongous complex where you’ll find 10 small apartments, all set up inside the snake’s “tail”.
This incredible property was built back in the year 2000 by architect Javier Senosian. The place was built using organic architecture, which is a branch focused on seamlessly combining natural spaces with architecture.
Being here will make you feel as though you’re walking inside a mythological dream. Aside from the main snake house, there are plenty of other figures all over the complex, all of which were inspired by Aztec characters.
Moreover, the architect had in mind to make Nido de Quetzalcoatl an oasis of nature. Despite it being located in a busy area, the house is set inside a forest where over 3000 trees have been planted, so you’ll really get to feel as though you’re hours away from the bustle and hustle of Mexico City.
At the moment, the only way to visit Nido de Quetzalcoatl is by booking it for a minimum of two nights on Airbnb. Demand is quite high, so you may need to book months in advance!
5. Tubo Hostel, Tulum
Tubo Hotel is a hostel, but with a twist!
Instead of sharing a dorm with strangers, you’ll get that sense of community and closeness, all while still getting your own private room as each bed is located inside a tube-shaped room!
The rooms are very small and only feature a bed and AC, but all around them, you’ll find common areas and amenities to get that hostel vibe.

6. Casa Ojiva, Queretaro
Located in what feels like the middle of nowhere in the state of Queretaro (about two hours north of Mexico City), Casa Ojiva is a brand-new house whose design was inspired by its surroundings and constructed using natural materials found in the area.
