Prince Edward Island is more than just a scenic destination—it’s a dream come true for Anne of Green Gables fans.
If you’re like me, you’ve had Prince Edward Island on your bucket list since reading the books or watching the classic mini-series.
Walking through the same landscapes that inspired L.M. Montgomery’s beloved stories feels like stepping into the pages of the book.
During my trip with The Enchanted Book Club, I truly felt surrounded by kindred spirits who shared a deep love for Anne’s world.
So, I want to help YOU plan your trip! Here are my personal suggestions for how to plan a trip to Prince Edward Island if you are an Anne superfan (like me!)
Step 1: Decide When to Go
Our tour was June 8-12 and the weather was gorgeous! It was before the summer crowds crept in which was great for taking photos (but the downside was that some places hadn’t opened yet for the season). If you love seeing flowers in bloom, visit in June when the famous PEI lupines are at their peak.

Summer (June–August) is also the most popular time for Anne-themed tours, so book early if you want in. It will be a lot more crowded (especially with cruise ship passengers) but you’ll get amazing weather and everything will be open.
Fall offers fewer crowds but cooler temps, while spring kicks off the season with charm (and better availability).
My suggestion is to figure out what’s on your must-do list and check to see when they are open and plan your trip around that.
Step 2: Book a Literary-Focused Tour (or DIY It!)
If you want an immersive experience, I highly recommend booking a tour with The Enchanted Book Club.

I joined their Prince Edward Island trip and it was a book lover’s dream—from exploring Green Gables to attending literary performances and even meeting Megan Follows herself (yes, Anne from the 1985 mini-series!).
I also found some tours that you might want to look into that will take some planning off your shoulders.

DIY Anne of Green Gables Tour Tips
Plan Your Trip Around Seasonal Hours
Most Anne-related sites are only open from May to October, with peak hours in July and August. Be sure to check each location’s website for updated hours so you don’t miss anything!
Rent a Car
PEI is very spread out and public transportation is limited, especially around Cavendish and Park Corner where many Anne sites are located. Renting a car makes it much easier to see everything at your own pace.
Map Out the Must-See Anne Sites
Here are a few Anne-themed stops to build your itinerary:
- Green Gables Heritage Place (Cavendish) – the iconic house and grounds
- Anne of Green Gables Museum (Park Corner) – Montgomery’s “Wonder Castle”
- L.M. Montgomery’s Birthplace (New London)
- Cavendish Post Office – send a postcard postmarked from “Green Gables”
- Montgomery’s Cavendish Home – where she wrote Anne
- Avonlea Village – a themed shopping/dining area with Anne vibes

Build in Time for Photos & Wandering
Many sites include walking trails like Haunted Wood and Lover’s Lane, plus gardens, beaches, and scenic stops. Allow time to explore, take photos, and enjoy the slower pace Anne fans will appreciate.
Make Meal Reservations in Advance
Popular restaurants in Cavendish and Charlottetown (like Blue Mussel Café or Dalvay by the Sea) book up quickly in summer. Call ahead or book online when possible.
Pack for Comfort & Weather
Bring comfy shoes for walking (there were a lot more trails than I expected), layers for the wind, and a small tote for your bookshop finds or PEI-made souvenirs.
Add Some Anne Magic for Kids
If you’re traveling with children, prepare them with a movie night of the 1985 Anne of Green Gables mini-series or read a kid-friendly version of the book. Many sites have fun spots for little ones to run, play, and imagine.
Step 3: Choose Where to Stay
Kindred Spirits Inn & Cottages
We stayed at the Kindred Spirits Inn in Cavendish, and it was everything I hoped it would be—charming, cozy, and walking distance to Green Gables Heritage Place.

My room was quite spacious and it even had a giant Jacuzzi tub. They also have cottages that would be great for families. Check the latest rates and availability.
Dalvay by the Sea
Another option is to stay in the elegant “White Sands Hotel” from Anne of Green Gables and Road to Avonlea!

This Queen Anne–style inn sits right in PEI National Park, with period antiques, stunning lake and beachfront views, and a full-service restaurant. It’s perfect for fans wanting a touch of literary luxury. Check the latest rates and availability.
Montgomery Inn at Ingleside
Or live like Montgomery herself at this charming B&B in L.M. Montgomery’s childhood home. With heritage rooms, a peaceful pond view, and a cozy farm atmosphere, it’s perfect for anyone who wants to step deeper into Montgomery’s world. Check the latest rates and availability.
If you’re deciding between Cavendish and Charlottetown, know that Cavendish is ideal for Anne lovers who want to be near the iconic sites, while Charlottetown offers more dining, shopping, and entertainment options.
Step 4: Create Your Itinerary
I think 3-5 days on Prince Edward Island is ideal, which 4 being optimal. So, here’s a 4-day Anne of Green Gables-themed itinerary for Prince Edward Island, perfect for solo travelers or families planning independently.
It includes plenty of time for sightseeing, rest, and soaking in all the Anne magic—plus a little time in Charlottetown.
Day 1: Arrival + Explore Charlottetown

- Arrive in Charlottetown, PEI’s charming capital city.
- Stroll around downtown and pop into the Bookmark Bookstore, which has a fantastic Anne of Green Gables section.
- Grab lunch at Founders Food Hall and sample some local eats.
Evening:
- Have dinner at Claddagh Oyster House or another local favorite.
- Rest up at your hotel or drive out to Cavendish to settle in for your literary adventure.
Tip: If you’re flying in late, plan your first night in Charlottetown before driving to Cavendish in the morning.
Day 2: Green Gables Day
Morning:
- Head to Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish. Spend about 2–3 hours exploring:
- The recreated house, complete with Matthew’s room, Anne’s puffed sleeves, and Marilla’s kitchen.
- Stroll through Lover’s Lane and the Haunted Wood.
- Visit the Interpretive Center to learn more about L.M. Montgomery.
- Check the Parks Canada schedule for special programming or a chance to meet “Anne.”

Lunch:

Lunch:
- Dine at the PEI Preserve Company—the raspberry cheesecake is a must!
- Wander through the garden next door and keep an eye out for blooming lupines in June.

- Head to L.M. Montgomery’s Birthplace in New London. It’s a small but meaningful stop—peek into the bedroom where she was (possibly) born and enjoy learning about her early years.
Evening:
- Enjoy a quiet evening with takeout or an early dinner—maybe even rewatch the Anne mini-series to prepare for the next day!
Day 4: The Wonder Castle + Beach Time
Morning:

Lunch:
- Stop at Sou’West Bar and Grill for ocean views and tasty seafood (the fish and chips are fantastic!).
Afternoon:
- Finish your trip with a walk at Cavendish Beach. It’s scenic, peaceful, and the perfect way to reflect on your Anne-inspired adventure.
Step 5: Travel Tips for Visiting PEI
How to Get to Prince Edward Island (and How to Get Around)
Most travelers heading to Anne of Green Gables country will arrive via the Charlottetown Airport (YYG). It’s a small but efficient airport, and even if you land late (like I did at midnight!), it’s easy to get where you’re going—especially if you’re part of a tour that arranges transportation in advance.
If you’re driving in from another part of Canada, you have a couple of options:
- Confederation Bridge: This 8-mile bridge connects New Brunswick to PEI and is open year-round.
- Northumberland Ferries: You can also take the ferry from Nova Scotia, which is especially scenic in the summer months. Just be sure to check the seasonal schedule and book in advance if you’re bringing a vehicle.
Renting a Car vs. Joining a Tour
PEI might look small on the map, but it’s surprisingly spread out. If you’re planning an Anne of Green Gables trip on your own, you’ll definitely want to rent a car.
Most of the key Anne sites—like the museum in Park Corner and Montgomery’s birthplace in New London—are scattered across the island and not walkable from Charlottetown.
That said, if you join a group tour (like I did with The Enchanted Book Club), transportation is typically included and you won’t need to worry about driving or directions.
Bonus: you’ll get to relax between stops and maybe even hear some fun local stories from your driver.
What to Pack for PEI’s Coastal Weather
PEI weather is a little unpredictable—especially along the coast—so layers are your best friend.
Even in June, I was glad to have:
- A light rain jacket (for surprise showers)
- Comfortable walking shoes (especially for trails like the Haunted Wood and Lover’s Lane)
- A cozy sweater or fleece for breezy evenings
- Sunscreen and sunglasses (yes, even in Canada!)
If you’re visiting in spring or fall, bring an extra layer just in case—it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, even when it’s sunny during the day.
You’ll Love Prince Edward Island
Whether you’re a lifelong Anne fan or just curious about L.M. Montgomery’s world, Prince Edward Island is a place that leaves a mark.
You’ll meet fellow kindred spirits, soak in beautiful views, and gain a deeper appreciation for the stories that shaped so many of us.
You don’t need to know every Anne quote by heart—just bring your curiosity and a bit of imagination.
