Amazing Weekend Getaway at Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa in Astoria, OR

The Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa in Astoria, OR

Spring in the Pacific Northwest is absolutely beautiful! I’ve lived in the Seattle area my whole life, but I haven’t explored Oregon outside of Portland. When I was invited to experience a girls’ weekend at Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa in Astoria, OR, I jumped at the opportunity! I mean, Astoria, Oregon, has so many things to do that are perfect for a girlfriend getaway. Here’s my honest review of Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa located in Astoria.

Where is the Cannery Pier Hotel?

Located just 3.5 hours from Seattle, WA, Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa offers guests unparalleled views of the Astoria Riverfront trolley and nearby Washington State.

Each room has a private balcony and is lavishly well-appointed with a fitness center, delicious gluten-free bread, and hardwood floors. The hotel itself is within walking distance of downtown Astoria.

In its heyday, Astoria was known as the Cannery Capital of the World. This history is alive and well at the beautiful hotel, with impeccable service, delicious breakfast, comfy beds, and a wine hour.

Conveniently located near Portland International Airport, it’s easy to see why it was named a top 25 Best Hotel in the West by Sunset Magazine.

Cannery Pier Hotel Lobby

The Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa offers a continental breakfast in the morning as well as wine and hors d’oeuvres in the evening. At 8 pm, they invite guests to grab freshly made cookies. There was also fresh lemon water that really hit the spot after spending the day exploring the town.

The staff at the front desk were very informed about Astoria and eager to suggest places to explore. I love it when staff members are truly excited to share their city with guests! They did a great job explaining the amenities available to guests. I also enjoyed a quick and seamless check-out.

Lobby with a Nice Touch

What I appreciated about the lobby was the extra places to sit and enjoy breakfast with a view. This hotel understands that a major draw of its location is the view. They capitalize on that by offering large windows in strategic places. The windows in the lobby provided lots of natural light. It’s a great way to enjoy the view on a chilly day. It’s all of the perks of dining al fresco without being cold!

On the second floor, there was a bit of an upstairs lobby where guests could sit and relax. I love that it was away from the (minimal) hustle and bustle of the main lobby. Guests could sit and drink their coffee or read a book without disruption. It would be a great place to catch up on work or plan out your day. Plus, the view from up there is breathtaking!

Double Queen Deluxe Room

Each Double Queen Deluxe Room includes a balcony river view, gas fireplace, microwave, personal wet bar, mini fridge and complimentary high-speed internet. There is plenty of room for lots of luggage and multiple people. It’s a great set-up for a girls’ weekend in Astoria, Oregon.

We were there in the Spring, and the room was full of natural light. The room was inviting enough to want to lounge there. Plus, this room faced the Columbia River, and the view was seriously incredible!

When I first opened the door to my room, I could already see the view of the bridge over the river! That was such a great welcome! I dropped everything and immediately went out on the balcony to take in the whole view. I truly couldn’t believe how close we were to the Columbia River.

Exquisite Bathroom with a Luxurious Feel

Clawfoot tub with a view of the Columbia River. Need I say more? Not really, but I will!

The bathroom was exquisite! It’s one of the largest bathrooms I’ve had in a non-suite room. I loved that the toilet was separated from the rest of the bathroom, so there was a bit of privacy. There was a shower and a stand-alone tub that was beautiful! There was also a vanity area away from the sink, so two people could easily get ready in the morning.

One of the first things I do when I get to a hotel is check out the toiletry swag. I’m a sucker for yummy-smelling soaps and shampoos. Each hotel offers guests something different, so I was curious what I’d find at the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa. What I found was an array of products by Pharmacopia that smelled fresh and clean. They also had make-up remover wipes, which are definitely helpful for a girl’s weekend!

Getting ready in the morning can take a while. Add in one or more girlfriends, and it can become a serious issue. Thankfully, the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa has a really large counter with two mirrors. There’s plenty of room for make-up bags, flat irons (and, in my case, breast pump parts!)

Pet-Friendly King Suite Room

The Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa has several pet-friendly rooms. This was great because my friend came to stay with me one night, and she brought her little dog, Lili. So when she joined me, we quickly moved to a King Suite in the Extended Stay section just a few doors down.

The wood floor was perfect for pets. The staff were so accommodating to Lili. They brought her a little dog bed, treats, a toy and several dog waste bags. That’s what makes this such a pet-friendly hotel in Astoria, Oregon.

The King bed was very inviting, and I bet pet owners would love to snuggle their dogs in this bed. Photo credit: Marcie Cheung

The bedroom was very large and had a walk-in closet. I appreciated being able to store my suitcase in the closet on a luggage rack. It kept the room feeling clean and spacious.

The living room had a pull-out bed. My friend was able to sleep there with Lili and watch the gorgeous sunrise over the Columbia River. Even with the bed pulled out, the room was large enough to walk around easily.

Tiny Dining and Kitchenette

Our King Suite did not offer a desk, but there was a cute little table and chairs next to the fireplace. The table was large enough for one laptop. I was able to Google some of the Astoria, Oregon, attractions we wanted to visit to make sure we had the correct information. We were able to sit there and drink coffee while looking at our map of Astoria to plot out our day. Since Astoria is so pedestrian-friendly, we walked everywhere we wanted to go.

The kitchenette featured a microwave, a mini fridge and a mini stovetop. Photo credit: Marcie Cheung

I was really impressed with this kitchenette. Had we known we’d have burners available, we may have brought food for a midnight snack. The mini fridge was perfect for storing drinks, string cheese and fruit. Oh, and lots of leftovers!

Continental Breakfast

When I checked in, the front desk staff kept emphasizing that they offered a “light” continental breakfast. They mentioned it a few times, so I prepared myself for mini muffins and coffee. However, this was the understatement of the stay!

For breakfast, I saw a make-your-own waffle station, pastries, cold cereal, oatmeal, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, juices, soy milk, coffee and tea. It felt like a full-blown continental breakfast. We were able to fill up enough at breakfast to have a late lunch. My only complaint was that the plates were a bit small for the waffle, which made it a bit messy to eat. However, that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.

The Spa at the Cannery Pier Hotel

The Spa at the Cannery Pier Hotel offers guests use of the hotel exercise room and hot tub overlooking the River, as well as use of the authentic Finnish sauna. These amenities were complimentary with our stay and spa treatment. While it’s a smaller spa, they do offer massage, facials and body treatments.

After walking all over Astoria, this hot tub hit the spot! Photo credit: Marcie Cheung

My friend and I enjoyed Swedish massages. The first thing I noticed when I entered the room was that it smelled fresh. My therapist was so friendly, and we ended up chatting about our love of travel for the whole massage. I spend most of my days carrying at least one child around, which leaves me with achy muscles. My therapist was able to zone into the areas most stressed and alleviate the pressure.

After our massages, we hit the showers to clean off the massage oil. Then, we changed into robes, put our belongings in the lockers and headed to the hot tub. The jetted tub was a great way to extend our relaxed state. When we had our fill of the tub, we transitioned to the Finnish sauna. I’m so glad there was a water cooler so we could hydrate in between. The sauna was fabulous, and it was the perfect way to end our time at the Spa.

Overall Review

I’d definitely stay here again in the Double Queen Deluxe Room! It’s quiet, and the view is outstanding. And the bathroom was ginormous! It felt relaxing and peaceful.

The King Suite would be perfect for pet owners. I don’t have pets, so I’ve never had the “pet experience” at a hotel before. I was a bit confused as to what we should do with Lili since it didn’t seem like she was supposed to be in certain areas of the hotel (like the breakfast area), but the pet policy requested that dogs not be left in the room. They have a really thorough pet section on their website, so if you are planning to visit with your pet, check it out beforehand.

I think our King Suite room was next to the laundry area because I ended up hearing fans or dryers during the morning. I sleep with earplugs, so I don’t hear anything at night. Also, we noticed that neither our bathroom nor kitchen sinks drained very well.

Besides the gorgeous view, large rooms and spacious bathrooms, I’d recommend the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa because it’s located away from the sea lions. Unlike many hotels located on the riverfront, this one is seriously quiet because it’s away from the roads and those barking sea lions!

In the evenings, guests can reserve a complimentary ride into town in a classic car! Photo credit: Marcie Cheung

And how cool is it that you can ride around town in style! The Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa offers complimentary chauffeur service in a classic car. Talk to the front desk about arranging a ride to/from dinner or any evening activity!

The Astoria and Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce and The Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa hosted my room and spa services. All opinions are my own.

Hello,That room looks so comfy, I don’t think I’d ever want to leave. How cool that you can bring pets! Although my dogs are still young and they’d probably eat the bed.
